Black Truffle
Tuber melanosporum e T. aestivumGuide to black truffle in Italy: where Tuber melanosporum is found, winter season and habitat. Umbria, Tuscany, Marche and Abruzzo with forest map.
The prized black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) is Italy's second most important truffle after the white. Its distribution is more restricted: it prefers calcareous soils, mixed broadleaf forests with downy oak, holm oak and hornbeam, and a climate with hot summers and cold winters. Umbria (Norcia, Cascia), Marche (Acqualagna), Abruzzo and southern Tuscany are the main production areas. Tuber aestivum (summer truffle) is a related species with a summer season and wider distribution.
Habitat
Forests of downy oak, holm oak and hornbeam on calcareous soils. Well-drained soil with slightly alkaline pH. The presence of 'burnt patches' (areas with suppressed vegetation around the symbiotic plant) is a historical sign.
